Every day at lunchtime, 14-year-old Emma Claire Callaghan gets a small, but incredibly thoughtful reminder of her father’s love. Her dad, Garth Callaghan, has written Emma notes on napkins for years, and says it became a passion when she was in third grade. Then last November, he stepped up his game. Callaghan pledged to write 826 notes for Emma — one for everyday until she graduates from high school (you can view some of his favorites below). He was inspired by “Because I Said I Would,” which is a social movement, “Dedicated to bettering humanity through the power of a promise.” But, the notes are also very important to him for a very personal reason.
This is Garth, Emma’s dad. He was diagnosed with terminal cancer and knew his days would be short lived.
Garth may die, but he will not let Emma eat lunch without that special note. This is his promise to write one napkin note for every day of class Emma has until she graduates from high school.
He has been writing napkin notes for Emma’s lunch box since she was in the third grade.
They contain just a few words of encouragement, but in the busyness of their separate days at work and school, it’s a moment where they can connect.
It’s a moment when Garth knows she is thinking about him.
This guy is truly an inspiration for being such a great dad to his daughter. Emma will have these notes for the rest of her life. It is the perfect keepsake in order to keep her father’s advice and humor a part of her life. Losing a parent is never easy, especially to something as terrible as cancer. These little napkin notes will surely remind Emma how much she is loved by her awesome dad.
