The Trio Animal Foundation found this big clump of fur at an open access shelter. They were shocked when they saw the pungent urine soaked and heavily matted ball of fur. They entered its cage and literally could not tell which end was front or back. They had to hold up a dog treat to see which end would lift up to sniff the treat. They were appalled when they saw this little dog and the shape that it was in. They knew they had to take immediate action.
They couldn’t even tell which end was front or back when they saw the poor matted dog in the corner of the cage.
The hair was badly matted. Fleas and gnats were swarming around the poor little pup. When the dog walked, it left a trail of liquid like a snail. The hair was so heavy it was literally ripping itself out of the dogs skin causing open woulds and infections.
Kelli is a professional groomer who accepted the challenge of helping out this little dog. She had to use every one of her grooming tools to break into the incredibly matted shell of hair.
Within 10 minutes of clipping, they found that the pup was a girl and they named her Ellen. It took over an hour and a half to trim down the hair to a manageable length.
The hair was matted 2 inches down Ellen’s ear canal and had to be carefully removed.
Her skin was paper thin and she was obviously in pain. Not once did she growl or show her teeth during the ordeal.
When it came time to shave the matted fur around Ellen’s legs, she looked up and started to give the groomer kisses. She must have been so relieved. The hair was literally ripping skin off of her.
The first time she felt a hand on her freshly shaven skin she looked up as if to say, “thank you”. The groomer ended up shaving over 2 pounds of matted hair from Ellen.
Once all the matted hair was removed, they bathed Ellen and gave her one more trim as to not miss anything.
She was taken to the store for a new leash, collar, and some toys. She was then taken to the vet for vaccinations and a checkup.
Ellen is now being taken care of and living a wonderful life at her foster mom’s home. This adorable 8.5 pound, 2 year old girl is available for adoption and could use a loving permanent home. She is wonderful with other animals and has a huge doberman as a best friend right now. It breaks my heart that people abandon their pets or let them get to this horrific state. Luckily Ellen was taken care of and given a day at the spa which she truly deserved. She will no longer suffer any abuse. The groomers literally shaved away her past and she is now a beautiful girl, ready to enjoy her new life.
