Man Turns Old Van Into Self-Sufficient Motor Home

Imagine having a van and giving it a huge makeover into your dream home. With just a matter of time, in as little as 6 months, the instructable user “Making it there” was able to remodel this whole cargo van into a home. After traveling over to Portland, Oregon and finding the van of his dreams it was a little more work than you might expect but the results are phenomenal! Take a look below.

In order to create this transformation he first needed a layout of every step he would use to build the motor home.

“Making it there” designed a great basic form on how he wanted everything placed inside to suite his needs.

Here is the final 3D drawing of every detail he wanted to included inside his own motor home. It looks like this guy is great with a computer which can come in handy with a project like this.

He took some measurements to make sure everything was going to work to his plan. They had to be exact.

It was then time to mask the interior so he could use spray foam insulation to offer some comfort in the elements.

Large amounts of spray foam would keep him warm in the winters and cool in the summer months.

It only took a few minutes of spraying the foam and then it was time to remove the masking tape.

He then covered the wall of the van with some gorgeous wood that would allow fixtures to be mounted to.

With the walls up he placed a substrate on the floor to insulate before the finished floor was installed.

The flooring with the walls is where you start to notice the base of this project really come together.

Because he took measurements early, he was able to cut each piece in his workshop before installing them into the van. Proper planning makes everything easier.

The power supply was installed next. This would supply power to every accessory inside the mobile home.

It even has a decent sized oven! This van is awesome.

He thought it would help to save water by installing a foot pedal and hand pump for the sink. This can be crucial during long trips.

You can see here how he designed the water to be inside of refillable tanks instead of a large tank underneath to maintain the temperature throughout summer and winter.

He then decided to design custom-made roof top vents for different occasions and seasons.

These custom-made tops can be opened from either side depending on your orientation from the way he bolted them in.

These roof tops were designed with secure protection from the elements.

The solar panels he installed have 100 watts to use for natural electricity while traveling.

The van seems perfectly at home in the woods.

There is a great amount of space and a very comfortable feeling.

The bedding fits so perfect inside this mini RV home! No need for sleeping bags.

There is so much adventuring ahead of him in this thing! This guy made use of every available inch of this van, which is essential when building something like this. I’m always one to be over prepared for anything, so the more room I have to store things the better. It still has all the luxuries of an actual home however, except a bathroom. My goal is to have a van like this within 3 years. If I want it to be as nice as this one, I’ll definitely have to start planning soon.
