Owning a home is probably one of the most stressful things you could ever do to yourself. All the maintenance and up keep that are required, and that is just for the landscaping. There are so many things that can go wrong with a house, and the expenses to fix them can add up really quick. Well unfortunately for a family in Australia, they were enduring some of the more frustrating construction you can do on a house. The family had to have some foundation work done, and decided to document the experience. It started out as a normal home improvement project. It took on a whole new feeling after what they found right beneath their backyard.
The family needed to bring in some heavy equipment for the project. Here is their daughter having some fun during the home improvement.
Even the family hound got involved in the fun. Things were about to take a turn that no one could have foreseen however.
To the untrained eye, these tiny pieces of dirt my not look like much. Luckily the family found the suspicious enough to investigate. Turns out they are skull fragments! This just went from an ordinary home renovation to a possible crime scene.
The family decided to dig a little more, and sure enough more of them started to appear! I would be starting to get seriously worried at this point. What could have happened in this backyard?
When you start to fill up a bucket with human bones, things are getting a little out of hand.
No, you don’t need to adjust your monitor. That is an actual human’s lower jawbone, with teeth in tact and all.
With all the bones recovered, you have to wonder how many people were buried here.
The cops were called in right away after the family had a firm grasp on what they thought these objects were.
The police were hesitant to label them human bones until the proper investigation was done to determine their origins.
After an investigation was conducted, it was determined these were in fact human bones. Apparently these people’s house had been constructed on top of an old cemetery. The cemetery was decommissioned back in 1872, and all the bodies were supposed to have been excavated and taken to a new plot for re-burial. Apparently a few were left behind however.
I am still wondering how this family was able to differentiate between the dirt clods in the yard with the tiny skull fragments that were strewn throughout it. They must have some seriously sharp eyes. I’m not sure how I would feel after finding out my house was built on top of a cemetery. I can almost guarantee I wouldn’t be getting any sleep for at least a few nights. The nearby university is going to send a team of archeologists to investigate the rest of the yard. Hopefully there are not more bones to recover. The family has been cleared of any suspicion of wrong doing in this very strange case.
