With the amount of money that scientific research receives in today’s modern world, you would think that we would be well on our way to discovering the mysteries of….well almost everything. You would think something like growing a chicken outside the shell wouldn’t be a problem right? Well it’s actually something science has never been able to accomplish. That is, until a group of Japanese high school students figured out how to do it themselves! This is an actual scientific breakthrough that was discovered by a group of high school students. Check out this incredible process, and feel completely inadequate about everything you ever accomplished in high school…..no, no one cares about your track and field medals.
They start with the eggs. Now these are not the eggs you find in the grocery store, as the majority of those are not fertilized or have been chemically cleaned. These are fertilized eggs that actually have the ability to create a chicken.
They use a simple piece of saran wrap you’d find in your kitchen and stretch it out.
The saran wrap will be used to hold the egg, so they wrap it over the top of a beaker to create a tiny clear bowl.
The egg is then cracked, and the inside is poured into the saran wrap.
Another layer of saran wrap is put over top the exposed yolk.
The eggs are then placed in an incubator, and the fun of watching them grow begins!
The yolk is not actually what creates the chicken, it is this bundle of cells called the “blastoderm.”
This is what has already happened by day 3, the heart has already formed!
By day 5, you can see a shape starting to form.
In just one short week, baby chicken has grown immensely.
After a few more weeks, the chicken is fully formed.
Here you can see one of the chicken’s wings.
And here is the baby chicken!
It was born happy and healthy, and has a ton of energy!
This is quite an accomplishment for a group of high school students. To be able to accomplish something that trained scientists have not been able to do is pretty amazing. Their findings have actually been published in foreign science journals! There are actual scientists who have never even had that distinction. These students should definitely feel a great amount of pride at the their incredible discovery.
