I’m sure you’ve seen the news stories here and there about bears and other wildlife that have wandered into neighborhoods. Most of the time they’re looking for food. I always feel bad for them. They don’t know to stay away. People and bears are a dangerous mix. When a gigantic black bear wandered into a Florida neighborhood, wildlife officers were called in to help tranquillize the bear and take him back into the wild where he would be safe. Then things went very wrong.
Here he is, looking for a little snack in the Florida neighborhood.
That’s when wildlife official shot him with a tranquilizer dart. You can see the dart in his back in this picture. The tranquilizer dart scared and disoriented him.
He was confused and headed out into the water. At that time, the tranquilizer kicked in and he started to drown.
In comes Adam Warwick, the manliest man alive. He is a biologist with the wildlife commission. And obviously, a huge animal lover and all around bad-ass.
He grabbed the bear by the neck and started swimming.
He said that he didn’t think twice when he saw the bear in the water, he jumped right in.
This bear is over 7 feet and 400 pounds. He had A LOT of adrenaline kicking in. Adam, not the bear. The bear was out of it.
The bear struggled a little and tried to climb on top of Adam trying to keep his head above water.
Adam headed to the shore with the bear.
Onlookers watched as Adam struggled to get the massive bear to shore.
Can you guess how many scratches Adam had from the bear? One. That’s it.
Once at the shore, Adam got assistance.
They had to use a tractor to transport the gigantic bear.
Adam stayed with the bear while they transported him back to his home in the Osceola National Forest.
Here he is, back where he belongs. In the wild. And on land.
There is an estimated 2,000 – 3,000 black bears living in the state of Florida. Do you know what to do if you see a bear? Here are a few tips just in case you run into one. Do not make eye contact. Back away slowly, do not turn your back or run. Running triggers a chase instinct. If possible make a lot of noise, bang pots or pans. And do not climb a tree. They are excellent climbers. And above all do not offer it a pot of honey. It is not Winnie The Pooh and will not be amused.
