Growing up I used to love watching The Jetsons. I always looked forward to what the future would look like and what kind of technology would be readily available to the public. I dreamt of flying cars (which I thought we would be in by now) and automatic hologram displays popping up everywhere. Is a Back to the Future hover board really out of the question? This is supposed to be the future, according to that iconic movie. Well the future is nothing like the past movies said it would be. We don’t have hover boards nor can we teleport. While we do have somewhat of a flying car, they’re not for everybody and still produce a lot of emissions. I will give some credit to the smart phone; this little device has shot innovation through the roof and propelled society into a technological playground. Other than that, our lives are not much different from how they were before the fax machine or the pager. Well Mercedes-Benz has decided to take mankind one step further toward the future with one incredible concept car. It was recently spotted driving around the streets of San Francisco and seriously created a buzz. It’s not just a new fancy Benz, this car is a perfect blend of sophistication, design, technology, and comfort seamlessly compiled into one beautiful driverless concept car. That’s right, it’s driverless!
Take a look at the Mercedes-Benz F 015 concept car. This incredible concept was announced a couple of years ago but it may be closer to production than we think. It just spent last weekend parading around San Francisco and the locals fell in love. The vehicle has been aptly nicknamed “Luxury in Motion” and that’s exactly what this driverless concept car stands for.
The first thing you may notice is the way the doors work as well as the driver’s seat. Because the technology in this car is so advanced it doesn’t require a driver. This allows the captain’s chair as well as the front passenger’s chair to swivel around to allow for more personal interaction with those in the back seats. This function can be used by simple hand gestures, eye-tracking as well as the touch screen panels on the doors.
Because the Mercedes-Benz F 015 can operate without a driver, certain things will change like complete opaque windows that give you ultimate privacy. You will be able to turn around and chat with your friends in the back seat on your way to a night on the town. Mirrors and gas pedals will no longer be necessary.
There will be interactive touch screen panels lining the interior of the vehicle that you can use to operate the vehicle’s functions, browse the web, check the weather, or perform a long list of tasks. “One core theme of the innovative interior concept is a continuous exchange of information between vehicle, passengers and the outside world.” A total of 6 interactive screens strategically placed throughout the interior will provide a digital living space.
Safety is a primary concern with the design of the driverless concept car. The vehicle uses visual and audio signals to alert pedestrians and other vehicles of any activity. The car has a laser projection system on the front to guide pedestrians and let them know when it is safe to cross the path of the vehicle. The brake lights spell out the functions creating a very bright and more noticeable tail light assembly. The concept car also incorporates acoustic communication including sounds and spoken instructions.
Featuring four lounge chairs designed for pure comfort, the F 015 is very easy to enter and exit. The shell of the car was designed for safety and strength first and foremost, while providing ample protection and safety for the passengers. “At the same time, the body shell’s structure provides the ideal basis for impact-protected installation of an F-CELL PLUG-IN HYBRID drive system.” What does this mean? Comfort, style, and almost 700 miles of zero-emission driving!
“The low-slung front end, smooth and streamlined roof line, flat front windscreen and road-hugging rear end give the F 015 Luxury in Motion an extended and decidedly dynamic silhouette. The vehicle body has a pronounced, attractive shape. The generously sized areas of outer skin fit snugly to the body.” The front end of this car is absolutely beautiful. I love the simplicity of the design. I feel that oftentimes designers who are given the task of coming up with a concept car take things a little too far. I understand they are supposed to represent the future of automotive design and technology but sometimes that can take away from the organic design that will be sought after and be timeless. This driverless concept car blends with its natural surroundings whether it is in a modern metropolis or a long freeway drive surrounded by a beautiful natural landscape.
The use of LED lighting for the grill and the rear lights is something that I’ve never seen before. It truly does look like it is right out of The Jetsons. While this car doesn’t fly, it has made leaps and bounds when it comes to future automotive technology and design. Mercedes-Benz’ driverless concept car has taken all of the things that we as individual people desire in a mode of transportation, and made the experience so much more desirable than a conventional vehicle.

In all honesty, I personally prefer a sports car that you can feel. A car that connects your foot to the pedal, powering the wheels that interact with the ground below. A true driver’s car that you control with a standard gear box and no traction control. This is fun but not necessarily convenient, easy, or comfortable. I would typically see something like this driverless concept car and think why, but after taking into consideration the sheer comfort, luxury, and convenience of this eco-friendly car my mind has been changed. While I will always have something less than practical in my garage for fun, I think I would have no problem clearing a spot for this beautiful Mercedes-Benz. It would be perfect for my daily commute, long road trips, or a night out on the town with my friends. Does this mean I would never have to arrange for a designated driver after a few drinks again? Take My Money!
