Going to the beach can be relaxing. There is the sand in your toes, the nice ocean breeze, and if you’re lucky enough you’ll have beautiful coral and brightly colored fish to look at too! BUT sometimes those brightly colored fish aren’t all that beautiful. In fact, they are ugly, mean, and will definitely give you nightmares. Here are 17 fish that are bound to keep you up at night.
Imagine this Deep Sea Dragon Fish coming at you in the ocean? Luckily most people won’t find this fish unless they are 3,000 – 10,000 feet deep. This fish is a predator, and it lures its prey in with the light on the end of the barbel. Another creepy thing about this fish, is that its stomach is black so when it eats another fish that also has a light, other fish can’t see it!
The Hairy Angler Fish looks like something out of a science fiction movie! Luckily they like to hang out in water upwards of 8,000 feet deep. This fish can grow up to the size of a beach ball, and the long hair-like antennas feel the vibration of fish nearby, not to mention it has extremely sharp teeth!
The Deep-Sea Lizard Fish is definitely one I will want to avoid. It can get up to 4-5 feet long! They have very sharp teeth, but these teeth are also found on their tongue! These fish tend to sit at the bottom of the ocean waiting for their prey, then they attack! They tend to be found around 2,000 – 11,000 feet in the ocean but even when divers have encountered them, they tend to leave them alone. Guess they are waiting for that perfect meal to swim by and humans aren’t it!
The Viper Fish is an ugly looking fish! Look at those teeth! They are pretty small, but don’t let their size confuse you. They have a jaw that can become unhinged to help it consume larger prey. Their stomach can expand up to twice the size when they are eating their food.
It’s not hard to figure out where the Snaggletooth Fish got its name. They can get up to 2 feet long and don’t have any scales. They also have a barbel that is used to lure their prey closer so they can plan their attack.
The Coffinfish is covered in pink spines and is often found by deep sea angers. It likes to lure their prey in, but at the same time it can puff itself up as a defense mechanism against prey.
Could you imagine accidentally stepping on this face while hanging out at the beach? This fish is called a Stargazer. This fish likes to hide on the ocean floor then bolts at its prey as it swims by. Not only are they great at hiding, they are also electric meaning it can shock its prey if needed.
This fish looks like it came out of the movie Alien! This Hatchet Fish lives in the depths of the ocean. It has 2 eyes that face upwards making it easy to catch food that may be falling from above.
While this Barreleye Fish may not be much of a predator, how freaky is this thing??? Their head is transparent so you can see pretty much everything that is enclosed in their skull.
The Grenadier Fish lives upwards of 20,000 feet deep. No wonder they aren’t the prettiest fish in the sea! This fish is a bottom dweller and has to fight for every bite they get!
I would love to have an octopus as a pet, but maybe not this one. This is the Blue-Ringed Octopus. It has extremely potent venom and there is no antivenin for it!
This Black Swallower Fish may not look as terrifying as some of the other fish listed on here, but it can consume prey more than 10x its size! WHOA!
This Goblin Shark can be found in the depths of the sea. It’s a rare site when anglers see this fish, but it’s one that should be avoided. Not only is it a shark, it has a retractable jaw so it can eat prey even larger than itself!
As if I didn’t hate spiders already, this Giant Spider Crab lives on the ocean floor and can get up to 12 feet long to claw!!!! I do not want to EVER see this creature in my life.
Did you know that Sea Slugs tend to be carnivorous? They have rows of extremely sharp teeth. They are typically smaller than 2 inches in length, but have been found up to 12 inches! No thanks!
The Moray Eel has sharp teeth that they use when eating their prey! These creatures can live up to 30 years and get up to 13 feet long.
The Crystal Jellyfish has a translucent like appearance, making it look almost ghostly in the deep ocean. Not only are jellyfish stings extremely painful, even deadly, the tentacles of this jellyfish can get up to 120 feet long!
Next time you are at the beach, are you going to think twice about getting into the water? Luckily most of these ugly creatures are found thousands of feet under the water!
