Growing up in the country, I had my fair share of interaction with wild animals. Living in the country meant that you had to deal with creatures such as coyotes. Coyotes are typically thought of as a nuisance animal, especially in areas with farms that have livestock. Coyotes are notorious for eating pigs, dogs and cats. Farmers tend to kill them when they have the opportunity because they can cause real financial loss to a farm. Coyotes are not that much different from dogs however, and a coyote named Wiley is showing that with the family that rescued him. Check out his story that took him from abandoned pup to family pet.
This is Wiley Coyote and his best friend Hailey Hanestad. Haley’s father brought home Wiley a few years ago when he was abandoned and in need of care.
The thought of raising a baby coyote probably wouldn’t intrigue most people, but having lived on farms their entire lives it didn’t seem the faze the family.
They decided to name him Wiley, and very soon he fit right into the family. A strong friendship between Wiley and Hailey even developed, and the two are now inseparable.
It was just like any normal relationship with a regular dog for these two. They played together, snuggled together, and just hung out every day.
Wiley’s diet consists of most venison and fried eggs. At this point though, he has developed a taste for the finer things. He won’t eat raw meat anymore, he needs it cooked!
He even gets baths, even though he seems to hate them.
Hailey’s father is sure to give Wiley a taste of the outdoors on a regular basis. They go on walks almost every single day.
They made sure to give Wiley an enclosure as close to his natural home as possible. He has plants all around him and even a burrowing hole just like a natural coyote habitat.
Can you imagine bringing this guy to school for show and tell?
This definitely isn’t the usual type of pet you would think of. Wiley seems to have adjusted to living life with humans extremely well however. His family also seems to be doing everything they can to still make him feel like a coyote. The biggest thing when owning a pet like this is giving them the proper environment to live in. This family went and built a custom enclosure for him complete with a burrowing hole. Many people don’t do that for their dogs, let alone a coyote!
