Being pregnant can be one of the most magical and tremendous things that a woman will ever experience. You get to feel the baby grow inside of you, you see your body physically change to become the perfect little home for your baby, and then as the baby continues to grow, you can feel the baby move. That’s when things start to get very real. As the baby grows, you feel like you are getting closer to experiencing the miracle that is child birth and meeting the human that you made with the person that you love. But what happens when that baby is actually a miracle baby? This was definitely the case for Chelsea Phillips. Read the story about Chelsea and her miracle baby, Silas, below. Chelsea Phillips felt that her entire pregnancy was completely normal. When she went into labor three months early, she was extremely nervous. Her doctor decided to do a C-section while she was just 26 weeks pregnant.
When her doctor performed the C-section, the amniotic sac didn’t rupture during delivery. This is extremely rare. Dr. William Binder, who is a neonatologist at Cedars Sinai Medical Center, helped deliver baby Silas, and because of the rarity of this medical phenomenon, he decided to take pictures of the experience.
“We caught our breath. It really felt like a moment of awe,” said Dr. Binder.
Silas was born, still in the amniotic sac. The placenta and umbilical cord were still tucked inside. He was curled up in a perfect fetal position, snuggling closely with his arms and legs.
Because the placenta was still attached, Silas was able to get oxygen. But the doctors knew they needed to work quickly to get the baby out of the sac and help him breath on his own.
Because he was born early, Silas will need to stay in the NICU for some time, but they expect Silas to go home sometime around his due date.
