A long time ago, a speakeasy may have been something taboo or even something that you actually had to search high and low to find. But now that alcohol is legal in most places, we don’t have to search very far for our favorite drinking establishment. But in Shanghai, they thought of bringing back the appeal of the speakeasy with a secret Coke machine. If you are a little confused, that’s okay. Lets take a step inside the a placed called “Flask” and it will all start to make sense.
Inside a sandwich shop called The Press in Shanghai, there is an old vintage Coke machine. It doesn’t look like much from the outside, but when you try to open the door, you’ll be in for a BIG surprise.
Once the door has been opened, you’ll go down a hall to a speakeasy called Flask. It has a modern feel to it, but also feels kind of naughty in a way, like you aren’t supposed to be there.
It was designed by architect, Alberto Caiola. I wonder what his thoughts were when he was first approached about this project.
The art on the wall is a piece that has 25-litre bottles covered in fabric. Definitely a unique but fitting piece of art for a place that you enter through a secret Coke machine.
When asked about the design of Flask, Alberto Caiola said, “The fun, lighthearted feel, the bright colors and lighting [in The Press] – within a few steps, these elements segue into a mysterious space with warm, muted lighting and the murmurs of bar patrons to invite further curiosity.”
This place definitely has a speakeasy feel but also has a modern feel. It looks like Caiola succeeded in creating their vision.
If you ever find yourself thirsty in Shanghai, make sure to visit The Press for a drink.
It looks like a cozy place to get away from the hustle and bustle of life, and just relax with some good friends while enjoying your favorite beverage.
The look of this bar is really great! It looks like something someone may try to design in their house, adding in the conveniences of peace and quiet.
These types of bars are becoming more and more popular throughout the world, but this is the first one I’ve seen that has such a classy feel to it. I can only imagine what it’s like to walk off the busy streets of Shanghai into this adult paradise.
