I like to think I have a pretty awesome car. I spend a lot of time working on it, personalizing it, and making it my own. My car exudes my personality and I’m constantly modifying it. I usually spend my weekends trying to make it perform better, look better, and most importantly stand out from every other one like it on the road. This isn’t an easy task and requires a lot of time researching and checking out other people’s projects so I can draw inspiration. The biggest problem with car modifications is usually the high cost behind them. Most parts will cost you hundreds, even thousands, of hard-earned dollars so most people don’t justify spending their cash on something that just brings them from point A to point B. When I come across pictures on the internet of something that stands out, I take note, draw inspiration, and figure out the next thing I want to do to my car. I came across this Tron inspired car and was absolutely floored. Not necessarily because of the skill involved or the time it took. This DIY modification requires very little cost and provides some insane results that look incredible. Reddit user Swagpac_Shakur came up with an idea that is turning heads and gaining a lot of attention. Inspired by the movie TRON, he took some very simple materials and created this incredible effect that I absolutely love. Check out the pictures below and just wait until you see this Toyota 86 GTS. In the states here, this car is known as the Scion FR-S as well as the Subaru BRZ.
He took his 2014 86 GTS and a big roll of simple reflective tape that you can pick up at any hardware store. The reflective tape is typically used for safety purposes, marking fence posts or mail boxes that are near busy roads.
Who would have ever thought of using reflective tape on any type of vehicle other than a construction truck or emergency vehicles?
You see reflective tape on those types of vehicles all the time and let’s be honest, it isn’t all too appealing. Definitely not something you would think to put on your daily driver. This guy took a material that is used for a completely different application and brought it into a new light. Well, the result for this TRON inspired car was far better than expected.
The reflective tape was applied to the body lines and contours of the Toyota 86 and sure looks great in the day. It looks like a vibrant pin striping job that stands out on its own. As soon as the sun goes down the magic happens. Take a look at this stuff at night! It really does look like this car came straight out of the movie TRON.
People have asked him about the legality of this custom reflective tape application and he states that he’s had no problems with it yet. In my opinion, as far as safety is concerned, it has the same effect of snapping your neck to watch a beautiful Lamborghini or a skull-shaking muscle car fly by. It definitely draws a lot of attention, especially at night, but I don’t think it would be too bright to cause any problems.
The lines of the Toyota 86 seem to be perfect for this application. I think a lot of this has to do with the owner’s vision for this project as well. In order to pull off this look, the vehicle has to have some striking body lines and sharp angles. You’ll need a car with an aggressive and sporty look.
The TRON inspired car stands out and looks good on its own but this custom reflective tape application sure makes it stand out from the rest. It accents the already aggressive body lines giving this car a futuristic feel making it look fast while its standing still.
I really want to see a picture of this car driving by taken with a long exposure that will make the orange glow follow the car just like in the movie! This reflective tape is only a couple bucks and he probably only used just a few rolls. He points out that you should use high quality 3mm reflective tape and you can get it in almost any color. Take your time and let the tape do the work. This car now stands out more so than those with thousands of dollars of modifications put into them. It’s clean and simple looking while accenting the already aggressive body lines truly making them pop. For such a cheap DIY project, the results are pretty awesome. I think this idea is going to start popping up all over because of how cool it looks. Not to mention, who hasn’t dreamed about racing around their city on a TRON bike? What are your thoughts?
