You may have heard of the tradition in Norway of a town that builds giant bonfires made from stacks of pallets. They stack the pallets about 130 feet high. It takes a lot of work, preparation and planning for it all to go off without a hitch. Well two districts in the Netherlands decided that they wanted to join in on the fun. Though they decided they wanted to add a little competition into the mix. Check out what they did below.

The two districts that came up with this twist on bonfire that Norway does are Scheveningen, in Noorderstrand, and Duindorp, in Zuiderstrand.

They decided to up the ante on what a town in Norway does. The town in Norway creates a giant bonfire and light it every year on June 24th to commemorate John The Baptist’s birthday.

After a while they had to create a makeshift ladder out of the pallets they were piling up so high.

Both teams worked tirelessly to accomplish their goal.

In the end though, only one team could come out the victor in this battle of pallet stacking.

The winner of the contest was Duindorp.

This is a pretty cool, but also a dangerous activity to be doing. It doesn’t look like these people are standing too far away from a giant burning pile of wood. Disaster could happen at any moment if someone is too close and the giant stack of pallets collapses. Let’s hope that never happens.
